Professional Bio

Sandra Spanier is Edwin Erle Sparks Professor of English and Women's, Gender, and Sexuality Studies and General Editor, Hemingway Letters Project. Dr. Spanier's areas of specialization are American literature after 1900; book history and textual studies; and Modernist studies.  Her book Kay Boyle: Artist and Activist (1986) was the first to be published about that distinguished and prolific American writer (1902-1992), followed by editions of Boyle’s writing:  Life Being the Best and Other Stories (1988),  her long-lost first novel, Process (2001), and Kay Boyle: A Twentieth-Century Life in Letters, Selected Letters 1919-1992 (2015).  She worked with journalist and fiction writer Martha Gellhorn (1908-1998) to bring into print her previously unpublished 1946 play, Love Goes to Press: A Comedy in Three Acts (1995; revised edn. 2010).   She is general editor of The Letters of Ernest Hemingway (Cambridge UP), a scholarly edition planned for 17 volumes (5 volumes published to date) and supported in part by the National Endowment for the Humanities.
